RGV iTech tipped me off to the latest release of Yahoo! Go in his latest post titled Cool Apps For Yahoo Users. I had signed up to be notified when they released the update, but it never came. The previous version was not compatible with the T-Mobile Dash, so all I had was email access. The interface is pretty smooth and includes your Flickr account. I like what it does.
What I Like About Yahoo! Go
- All-in-one screen
- Satellite photos in color and sharper than Windows Live Search
- Easy photo upload to Flickr
- Easy email app
The Downside
The only downside to Yahoo! Go is that I tried to install it on the memory card instead of my phone and it would not work. In addition, I notice that it is a bit of a resource hog. A T-Mobile Dash can have up to 12,000 KB (more when brand new). Lately, after activating Windows Live, my resources are around the 8,000 KB mark. After shutting down all programs in the Task Manager, adding Yahoo! Go brings resources down from 8,000 KB to about 1,500 KB. This means that if I try to run anything simultaneously, I won’t be able to do it. If it runs out of memory, something will shut down.
What I Don’t Like
- You cannot remove items from the carrousel
- Cannot figure out how to remove default updates on carrousel items I don’t want
- I can’t figure out how to update the calendar
Still Going To Give It A Try
I am still going to give Yahoo! Go a try. Compared to Windows Live, it’s a one-screen solution with the exception of instant messaging. Yahoo! Go does not include an instant messenger in their package whereas Windows Live has the Live Messenger built-in with the phone. Windows Live lets you easily upload photos to your MSN Spaces album and Yahoo! Go makes uploading pics to Flickr simple as well. This is an ongoing trial and I’ll be updating as I learn more.
Questions
- I can’t tell if Yahoo! Go is able to use my WiFi connection or if it defaults to EDGE.
- Will it crap out if I don’t empty my mail Inbox regularly?
- If I synchronize my phone and Yahoo, will I end up with double entries? (I don’t want to delete 700 contacts again).
