Twitter in Politics?

I was reading an article in The Capitol Crowd this morning. The post relates to social media in general, but probably applies to politics. One of the services mentioned was Twitter. The author sees no use for Twitter:

Recently, I even created a Twitter account, but the only possible personal use I can see is IF I let my children get accounts and IF I let them have cell phones and IF they would tell me where they are and what they’re doing all day.

After using Twitter during Barcamp Austin II and ever since, I find it interesting that the usefulness of Twitter is questioned. People in politics are generally NOT first adopters. They lick their finger and raise it to find out which way the air is blowing before commiting to any course of action. IF, and it’s a big IF ($ required), I were a political type person, I would use Twitter throughout a campaign.

Imagine this, if you are a political type, you are certain to have events that you attend. Would you not want to be in touch with your audience to let them know where you will be? What if you could send a message during an event that says, “(insert name) is up next. We need your loud support”? If you could keep your base informed about all your public appearances, not by email or snail mail, but through through SMS (text messaging for you Americans), it would go a long way towards organizing your supporters. Keep in mind that repetition breeds familiarity. If you are a politico, having that constant Tweeting with your voters can go a long way towards securing their votes. What if you could text message everybody while they are standing in line at the polls? Twitter, if used intelligently, could go a long way towards getting people moving.
